Mayer Brown's Antitrust & Competition practice strengthened by hiring Andres Font Galarza

10 January 2008 - Mayer Brown LLP, a leading international law firm, announced today that Andres Font Galarza, 42, a senior official of the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition, has joined the firm as a partner in its Antitrust & Competition practice. He is based in the Brussels office.

Mr. Galarza brings to his new role a wealth of experience in matters related to antitrust and competition law. His career at the European Commission spanned 16 years, three at DG Internal Market followed by 13 years at DG Competition. There he played a key role in cases that shaped EU law and policy, particularly as related to cartels, and was involved in more than 40 merger cases. He also served as liaison with national competition and regulatory authorities. Mr. Galarza has extensive experience in dealing with the emerging Chinese competition authorities, who are assisting with the publication in Chinese of a book on competition law that he co-authored.

Most recently, he was Deputy Head of Unit at DG Competition, responsible for enforcing EC law governing competition in the sectors of consumer goods, construction, foodstuffs and medical products and biotechnology. Other sectors in which he was involved at the EU include media, intellectual property and computer software.

"Andres Galarza is a highly experienced and knowledgeable attorney on EU antitrust and competition law," said Kiran Desai, Partner in Charge of Mayer Brown's Brussels office. "His insights, technical ability and outstanding reputation in the antitrust community will enable him to effectively assist clients in steering their cases through the EU and other international and national jurisdictions."

At Mayer Brown, Mr. Galarza will deal with matters relating to mergers, joint ventures and cartels and also will provide strategic and policy advice to clients.

"Mayer Brown's Antitrust and Competition practice is renowned for its intellectual prowess and practical business advice, and I welcome the opportunity to join this proven team in serving client needs around the world," Mr. Galarza said. "I anticipate that the firm's recent combination with Johnson Stokes and Master, one of the leading law firms in Asia, will afford many opportunities to put my knowledge and experience to work on behalf of clients in China."

Another recent addition to Mayer Brown's Antitrust and Competition practice is Donald Klawiter, who joined the firm as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office in October. "Don and Andres both are eminent lawyers with strong experience and reputation, particularly in the cartel field," said Kenneth S. Geller, Vice Chairman of Mayer Brown. "Their presence further demonstrates the depth of expertise Mayer Brown is able to offer global clients regarding antitrust issues.

"The firm's Brussels office has become a significant platform for competition, trade, regulatory, tax and government affairs work, all areas of importance to the firm and its clients," he added.

Mayer Brown's Antitrust & Competition practice attorneys are leaders in antitrust and competition law and bring extensive and far-ranging experience and high-quality service to important matters related to mergers, cartel investigations, complex civil litigation, dominance and abusive conduct inquiries and state aid. Our global resources and experience enable us to represent clients in high-stake litigation, including litigation before the US Supreme Court and the European Courts of Justice; and represent clients in criminal and civil investigations.
